Tottenham impressed in their opening Carabao Cup match, albeit against Championship opposition, to secure a comprehensive 5-1 victory against Charlton Athletic.

In the opening knockings, the game was relatively even despite the home side having the lion’s share of possession.

That was until Mikey Moore fired in the Lilywhites’ opener. Dominic Solanke compounded the Addicks misery before half-time, adding a second.

In the second half, substitute Kevin Danso rose to head in a third from Matheus Fernandes’ set piece before Spurs’ recent arrival stole the show.

Savio, who only signed for Spurs on Tuesday, scored a wonderful goal just over 10 minutes into his debut after coming off the bench. He went on to grab an assist just minutes later, his shot from inside the box deflecting off Ben Davies and into the net.

Charlton scored the evening’s final goal. Lloyd Jones headed in from a corner late on.

Tottenham will face Liverpool away from home in the 3rd round, a fixture that many fans are not relishing given the club’s record at Anfield.

Savio SHOULD start against Newcastle on Saturday

Savio received an immense reception from those inside the ground when he came on; it felt as though that moment had been a real long time coming.

The buzz around the ground every time the Brazilian got on the ball was tangible.

Of course, expectations must be managed given the calibre of opposition, but the 22-year-old looked like the real deal on Wednesday evening and exactly what Spurs have been missing in a forward sense.

He was able to glide past players with relative ease on a few occasions, link up with Pedro Porro on the right-hand side flawlessly and finish with aplomb when the opportunity presented itself.

Simply, he has to start on Saturday.

Matheus Fernandes, Sandro Tonali and Rodrigo Bentancur are Spurs’ strongest midfield trio at this moment in time

Matheus Fernandes was another new signing who impressed yesterday. The young Portuguese midfielder looked assured every time he was on the ball.

At just 21-years-old, he looked like a player far past his years.

Spurs’ £100 million man, Sandro Tonali, didn’t enjoy as emphatic an appearance against Brentford as Fernandes did against Charlton, but it is undeniable he will nail down a spot in the pivot and must be given the time to do so.

That’s where Rodrigo Bentancur, who is such an underrated presence in the middle of the park, is the ideal candidate to play alongside the two new boys in midfield.

Whilst the Uruguayan doesn’t have the X factor of the other two, his ability to bring calm from the chaos on and off the ball is something both Tonali and Fernandes can feed off as they start their Tottenham careers.

That essence of composure simply isn’t replicated by other options like Lucas Bergvall or Connor Gallagher.

Natural attacking midfielders Xavi Simons, James Maddison and Mohammed Kudus are all injured or returning from injury, so for the foreseeable future, Tonali, Fernandes, Bentancur is Spurs’ most component and balanced midfield three.

It was doom and gloom after Spurs’ defeat away to Brentford last Saturday, and in many ways, rightly so.

But after the club’s victory on Wednesday, many fans seem suddenly far more optimistic.

The result last night, albeit against Charlton, should be celebrated as progress. Tottenham last season would’ve made a lot harder work of such a fixture.

There is belief amongst fans that De Zerbi will get it right, but there must also be an acknowledgement that this isn’t an overnight fix.
